Doornberg's Game-Winner Lifts Ole Miss Past Maryland

February 21, 2010

BOCA RATON, Fla.- Sophomore Corrine Doornberg laced a single to center to drive in pinch runner Brittany Broome from second in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Ole Miss (6-4) a 2-1 victory over Maryland on the final day of the FAU Kickoff Classic.

Doornberg's knock to center scored Broome, who had pinch ran for Aly Presswood earlier in the frame. With two down in the inning and no one on, Presswood pinch hit for pitcher Becky Nye and drew a walk from Maryland pitcher Kerry Hickey. Presswood then moved to second on a single to left by Alise Doubt. Broome entered to run for Presswood and slid in to home with the game-winning run on Doornberg's base hit.

"It is great to end the weekend with a last at-bat win," said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. "The girls fought hard to win this game today and make the weekend successful."

Nye (2-3) picked up the complete-game win for Ole Miss after allowing only one run on five hits in 7.0 innings of work. She struck out seven and issued three walks.

Hickey took to loss for Maryland after giving up one run on three hits in 2.2 innings of work.

Doornberg finished the game two-for-four at the plate with an RBI.

Maryland jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth on an RBI single from third baseman Alex Schultz to give the Terps a 1-0 lead.

Ole Miss tied the game at one in the fifth after third baseman Cali Overbeck tripled to center to lead off the frame and then scored when Maryland pitcher Kerry Hickey was called for a balk.

The Rebels return to Oxford for the Red & Blue Classic beginning on Feb. 26. Ole Miss will host Centenary, Murray State and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville in the three-day tournament at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
