July 30, 2010 OXFORD -- Allen Brown, an All-America end on three of John Vaught's Ole Miss Rebel teams, will be one of six individuals honored in Jackson with enshrinement in the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame on Friday. Other former athletes to be recognized include Henry Armstrong, Bob Coleman, Frank Dowsing, Lake Speed and Ken Toler. A native of Natchez, Brown earned three letters (1962-64) at Ole Miss and served as co-captain of the 1964 Rebel team. He also earned first team All-America honors from the Associated Press, Time Magazine and The Sporting News in 1964, and was a first team All-SEC selection in 1963 and 1964. Following his career at Ole Miss, Brown participated in the 1964 Blue-Gray Game, the 1965 Chicago All-Star game and the 1965 Senior Bowl. Inducted into Ole Miss Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989, Brown played two years (1966-67) for Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers and was part of helping win Super Bowls I and II. In 2004, Brown was honored by the Southeastern Conference as an SEC football legend. Brown also had two sons play at Ole Miss. Tim earned two letters as an offensive guard (1988-89) and was co-captain of the 1989 Rebel squad, while Burkes lettered twice as an offensive tackle (1991-92). Friday's enshrinement ceremony and banquet will be held beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Jackson Marriott. On Saturday, the inductees will host a meet-and-greet at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum starting at 9:30 a.m. That evening, the Museum will host the "Drawdown of Champions" featuring food and live and silent auctions. |
