Stenhouse Jr. and CitiFinancial Team Shows Determination in Montreal
?> August 30, 2010
Montreal, Canada (August 29, 2010) – For Ricky Stenhouse Jr., of Olive Branch, it was another weekend of firsts. The rookie hit Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal for his inaugural run north of the border. Stenhouse had one goal and that was to improve each time he hit the track. He did just that in both practice sessions. When it came time to qualify on the 2.7-mile road course, Stenhouse wheeled his CitiFinancial Ford around the course in 103.64 seconds; good for 23rd on the starting grid. While the first 10 laps of the race were non-eventful, Stenhouse was a victim of a multi-car wreck on lap 12. After spending 10 laps behind the wall to fix front end damage, the crew sent Stenhouse back on track where he battled to the checkered flag. He finished a respectable 24th. “I am disappointed with our finish, but I can’t say enough about how hard these CitiFinancial guys worked to get us back out after the wreck,” said Stenhouse after the race. “It was a high speed, blind turn and the track was blocked. “I thought I was going to be able to get the car slowed down but I just ran out of room. The guys always give me fast cars and even after they fixed the car, we were running pretty fast times. We just can’t catch a break. It’s been like this all year but we’re keeping our heads up and are ready for Atlanta next weekend.” Still under caution on the next lap, Kelley ordered Stenhouse to pit again to check the front valance and top off the fuel. This move forced Stenhouse to restart in the 36th position. Just after the restart on lap 12, the rookie was an innocent victim of a multi-car wreck after the No. 97 (Joe Nemechek) was spun which collected several cars including the Stenhouse who had no where to go. The CitiFinancial crew spent 10 laps behind the wall working on the front of Stenhouse’s Ford. After replacing a radiator and repairing the significant damage, he returned to the race where he was scored 10 laps down in the 37th position. Determined to finish the race, Stenhouse steered clear of trouble and as cars fell out of the race, the young wheelman continued to pick up positions. A late caution sent the race into overtime and following a green-white-checkered finish, Stenhouse crossed the line and was credited with a 24th-place finish. Boris Said took the checkered flag in the Napa Auto Parts 200 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Sunday afternoon. Next weekend, the Nationwide Series heads south for its first and only trip to Atlanta Motor Speedway in 2010. The Great Clips 300 can be seen on ESPN2 on Saturday evening, Sept. 5, at 5:30 p.m.
