Ole Miss Softball to Honor St. Jude Patient at Home Opener

OXFORD - Haley Hines, a patient at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, will be honored by the Ole Miss softball team at the Rebels' home opener on Friday, Feb. 26.

Hines, who will be accompanied by her family, will throw out the first pitch at both the Rebels' games against Centenary at 10 a.m. and Murray State at 4 p.m.

A three-year-old from Florida, Hines was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a type of cancerous brain tumor, in September 2009, and has been at St. Jude since that time undergoing treatment.

The team first met Haley in January of this year after a community service trip to the hospital. The players quickly adopted Haley as one of their own and came up with the idea to make her part of the Ole Miss softball team.

"The visit to St. Jude has had a huge impact on the team," said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. "The girls naturally took to Haley, and she has given them extra motivation and an extra appreciation of life. We are so excited for her to be part of our team."

"You couldn't help but fall in love with Haley from the first time you met her," said senior Alise Doubt. "She has the biggest smile you have ever seen, and you just want to be around her because she is so happy.

“We were so excited when we found out we were going to adopt her to our team, because she is so strong and such an inspiration after everything she has been through. After our visit she gave us the biggest hugs and you just felt how special she is."

In addition to throwing out the first pitch, Haley will be made an official member of the team, given a team uniform and presented with her own personal locker in the Ole Miss locker room for the entire season.
