SBEC Coaches Certified

August 24, 2010

This month, all SBEC coaches were certified for another two year time period in CPR and the use of an AED.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a combination of rescue breathing and chest compressions delivered to victims thought to be in cardiac arrest. An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable device that delivers a shock to the heart of those who have suffered Sudden Cardiac Arrest caused by abnormal heart rhythm.

School nurse Mitzi Phillips led the training, which permitted each coach to practice CPR and the use of an AED. Each school administrator received the same training from Phillips and is fully certified.

“Our administrative staff and all coaches are trained to administer CPR and to use one of the five AED’s strategically located on our campus to respond to an emergency situation,” said Phillips. “Further, we have designated a first responder for each school hallway and in the after-school program for situations that may arise.”

But Phillips said that it is very important for athletic personnel to be well prepared for these situations.

“Coaches are in close association with students under strenuous athletic practices. In game situations,” she explained. “The coaches must be prepared to respond to adult and student cardiac needs.”

School President David Manley also commented on the purpose for training staff and coaches.

“Doing everything we possibly can to provide a safe place for students and visitors alike is a high priority,” he said. “For that reason, we make every effort to insure our administrative staff and coaches are certified in CPR and the use of an AED.

“No one wants to confront a cardiac emergency,” Manley added. “However, we must take steps to be prepared should such a situation occur.”
