Olive Branch Baseball Team Works to Overcome Hype
With almost their entire starting lineup returning, expectations for the 2010 Olive Branch High School Conquistadors baseball team were sky high. ?> Unfortunately, the team’s 1-2 start has brought some of those lofty goals crashing back down to earth.“We beat Oxford, 20-3, then we turned around and lost to Oxford, 6-3,” said head coach Chris Cascio, who led OBHS to a 17-17 record and a state playoff berth last season. “Then we lost to Senatobia, 6-3. “We’re just not hitting well,” he observed. “Our defense is where it should be at this time of the year, but we’re just not hitting.” Against Senatobia, the Quistors managed just four hits. By contrast, Olive Branch had 15 hits in the win over Oxford. The 2010 Quistors return starters and experience at practically every position. “We’re senior-heavy,” Cascio explained. “We’re starting six seniors and two sophomores.” Cascio is hoping a Spring Break field trip will help the coaching staff find out exactly what kind of team Olive Branch is – and can be – as the Quistors travel to Florida for a national tournament at Walt Disney World. “We’ll be finding out what kind of team we are when we go to Florida,” Cascio noted. “It’ll be good experience for us.” In addition to Olive Branch, teams from North Carolina, Texas and Tennessee are scheduled to participate. The Quistors also took part in the event two years ago. “It’s good exposure for our kids,” Cascio said. “Colleges that would never even come up here get to see our kids play. We’re excited about it.” (Photos by Jamie Mercer) |
