Tigers Add Shoulder Pads and Up the Intensity

August 11, 2010

MEMPHIS --- The Tiger football team took to the field today in shoulder pads and shorts and worked on the grass fields of the Murphy Athletic Complex for the third day of fall training camp.

While the first two days had overcast skies, the heat was turned up a bit for today's practice. The Tigers, who have worked much of the summer in similar temperatures, fought through the two and a half hour practice.

It was about 97 degrees with a heat index of 111 degrees through much of the workout.  The athletic training staff hustled in and out of drills keeping the players hydrated and assisted those who were cramping.

"There is a real emphasis in technique and execution once you put the pads on," said head coach Larry Porter.  "You can get hand placement where you want it and you can be more aggressive and physical."

The squad will be in full pads on Friday and will have its first two-a-day session on Saturday.

Tiger Nation will have its first chance to meet and greet the 2010 Tigers at Football FanFest on Aug. 22 from 3-5 p.m., on the U of M campus. The outdoor activities such as the bounce centers and face-painting will take place on Memorial Field outside of the Elma Roane Fieldhouse which is located on Zach Curlin Blvd. The autograph session will be held in the main gym of the Fieldhouse.
