Lewisburg Still Looking for First Victory of 2010?>
August 27, 2010
The Patriots started out strong on Friday night, but in the end it was another loss in the record books as Lewisburg lost, 31-16, to the visiting Memphis Sheffield Knights. John Taylor wasted little time getting the Pats on the scoreboard in their first home game of 2010 as he raced 73 yards for a touchdown with just over a minute gone in the contest. The extra point gave Lewisburg a 7-0 lead with 10:45 left in the first period. One minute later, Tyler Sullivan blocked a Memphis Sheffield punt and teammate Patrick Brown took it into the end zone for a safety, extending the Pats lead to 9-0. The Knights, however, scored 12 first-half points to take a 12-9 advantage at the break. With 2:45 remaining in the third period, Xavier Morris scampered 80 yards for Lewisburg’s second touchdown of the game. The point-after gave the Pats a 16-12 lead. Unfortunately, the rest of the game belonged to the Knights as they rattled off 19 unanswered points in the fourth period. “We made a few mistakes,” said first-year head coach Butch Veazey. “We’ve got to work on our technique and learn how to control the football.” After falling to North Pontotoc, 48-15, in the season opener, Veazey said the Patriots needed to overcome mistakes and continue coming together as a team. “We made a lot of mistakes that first week,” Veazey noted. “We worked on them in practice and we made fewer mistakes this week. “These are great kids to work with,” he continued. “They play hard and they’re looking to win, and they play together defensively and offensively.” Lewisburg continues its run of five straight home games on Sept. 3 as the Patriots host Ripley in a 7:30 p.m. match.
