Knox Sets Course Record, Play Suspended Due to Lightning

Robinsonville, MS (August 5, 2010)… Russell Knox of Scotland fired a course record ten-under par 62 at Tunica National Golf Club in the first round of The Gold Strike Casino Golf Classic and is the clubhouse leader by two after play was suspended due to dangerous lightning at 5:45 Thursday evening. Knox, who matriculated to Jacksonville, Fla., for college, posted bogey free nines of 31-31 for his record setting 62 on Thursday morning. The twenty-six year old started his round on the back nine and added birdies on hole No’s 11, 13, 14, 16, 17. Once making the turn to the front side, Knox continued his torrid pace with birdies on holes 1,7 and 8 and an eagle on hole 3. Drew Lanning (Little Rock, AR) sits in second place after opening with a eight-under par 64 Thursday. Lanning’s round started on the back nine and he was able to kick start his round with an eagle two on his first hole of the day. The former TCU golfer added birdies on holes 12, 14 and 16 before a slip up on hole 17 with a bogey left him with a four-under par 32 at the turn. After making the turn, the former Horned Frog added back-to-back birdies on holes 3-4 and holes 6-7 for matching nines of four-under par 32. Grant Leaver (Centerville, TN) and Brent Long (Carthage, TN) opened with seven-under par 65’s Thursday and will start the second round trailing Knox by three strokes. Former Ole Miss golfers Kyle Ellis (Senatobia) and Adam Swope (Wesley Chapel, FL) as well as Memphis native Scott Tashie head up the local Mississippi contingent in the Gold Strike Casino Classic after the trio opened with four-under par 68’s Thursday. Round One will resume at 7:30 am Friday morning with Round two set to begin at 8 a.m. The afternoon wave of Round Two is tentatively scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. Friday afternoon. After the completion of Round Two, the field will be cut to the low 70 players and ties. The total purse for The Gold Strike Casino Golf Classic is $200,000 with $30,000 going to the winner.
