The office of Continuing Education at Northwest Mississippi Community College will be offering several non-credit classes this fall, according to Pam Wooten, coordinator of Continuing Education.

Upholstery 101, which is taught by Gloria Singleton, will be offered on Thursdays, Sept. 9-Oct. 7, from 6-8 p.m. The fee for the class is $130, plus fabric and supplies. The deadline to register is Tuesday, Sept. 7.

Participants in this class will learn the basics of upholstery—the skills, materials, tools and tricks of the trade. The first class will consist of discussing fabrics, tools and supplies needed for projects.

Students will be required to bring a small piece of furniture on which to work and will learn how to cut fabric, and trim to attach it to the furniture.

Dog Obedience will be offered on Thursdays, Sept. 9-Oct. 14, from 6-8 p.m. Pam Thomas will serve as instructor for this class, which has a $65 fee. Registration deadline is Tuesday, Sept. 7.

Students taking this class will learn to train their dogs using different commands. Dog owners must be 15 years or older.

Spanish for Tourist will be taught by Wendy Gregory. The class will be held on Saturdays, Sept. 11-Oct. 2, from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., in Physical Science addition

building. There is a $90 fee for this class with the book included. The registration deadline is Wednesday, Sept. 1.

Travelers needing to get directions, order in a restaurant or make a purchase in Spanish are encouraged to take this course. The final exam for this course will be a visit to a local Mexican restaurant where participants will practice placing their order in Spanish.

Chair Caning will be offered Tuesdays, Sept. 14-Oct. 5, from 6-8 p.m. Sharon Williams will serve as instructor. There is a $60 fee for this course ($10 if student supplies chair/stool; $20 if instructor supplies stool). The registration deadline is Tuesday, Sept. 7.

Students will be taught to weave a chair seat with fibre rush. Fibre rush is a very durable, one-ply twisted paper, made to resemble real twisted bull rushes. The style

is similar to the rockers seen in front of Cracker Barrel restaurants.

Students will also be given an option of using seagrass and split reed. Participants may supply dining chair, rocker or child’s chair or purchase a kit from the instructor.
