Senate Sustains

February 25, 2010

By John Mayo (D., DeSoto County)

Mississippi House of Representatives

First, I made a remark about losing the August paycheck.  Under a bill passed by the House, that MIGHT happen.  The bill was one on which an amendment was made to start school after Labor Day.  That would help the Gulf Coast with their Tourism $$$.

I am told now that depending on the local pay cycle, the check may be DELAYED two weeks.  BUT, I have a call into MDE to find out the true story.

I was also told by our Chair of Education that the Senate chair of education was not going to bring that bill up.

I will check, myself, though on both accounts --- bill coming up and what would happen if it passes, which I doubt.

The senate sustained the governor's veto.  By a margin of 30-21, requiring 34 to override, the attempt failed.

Can't wait to hear the posturing on this one.  Told you in my C-L Blog that there was a rabbit pulled out of the hat at the last minute (actually the evening before the vote), but unfortunately it was only about half of what the House recommended.

I guess like that Mii in the Wii resort sword dueling contest I wrote of someone's jumping up and down slashing the air with a sword and celebrating "victory.”
