February 25 Governor's Message
February 25, 2010
?> By John Mayo (D., DeSoto County) Mississippi House of Representatives
First, I checked with the chair of education in the senate. He says he will not bring that House Bill up that would start school after Labor Day. So for now, the effort is dead...but there is still 40 days or so left in the session. The issue most of you have been writing about was an amendment to a bill. I believe the amendment barely passed. I voted "no." As an aside, school districts can start school any time they want. They just have to get in the 180 days of instruction. Here's the governor's message on the senate voting to sustain his veto.
DATE: February 25, 2010 STATEMENT OF GOVERNOR HALEY BARBOUR ON SENATE VOTE TO SUSTAIN HIS VETO OF SB 2688
"I am pleased the Senate has voted to sustain my veto of Senate Bill 2688, and hope the entire Legislature will now move to resolve this issue. We have the resources to restore funding to our priorities this year, including law enforcement and corrections; such a funding restoration bill is already in a conference committee. It's critical that we put this fiscal year behind us because we have major challenges and tough decisions to make on the state budget for next year. I will continue working with the Legislature in that effort." |
