From Paris With Love
February 16, 2010
?> By John Mayo
First, last week I was in the mood for a real shoot 'em up, I mean one where revenge was the rule, violence was the game. I was just in that kind of mindset. I went to see the John Travolta movie, "From Paris with Love." Folks, there was nothing of redeeming social value in that one. I mean Travolta killed and then killed some more, all in the name of protecting the U.S. from terrorists. He was some kind of spook who recruited an unlikely embassy employee who had a girlfriend who turned on him (the employee) by betraying her/his love (ohhhhhhhhhhh my heart bleeds so). There was blood, mayhem, explosions, fire, pestilence, wow...did I get what I wanted! If you are in that kind of mood, you know like you want to kick your cat for no good reason, this is it...this is really it. Otherwise....don't waste your money.
Crazy Hearts
Went to see this last night because Jeff Bridges is Oscar nominated and I kinda like him. Jeff plays a country movie start on the skids (remember the Wrestler from last year? Crazy Hearts is 10 times better). Jeff certainly deserves a nomination, he turned in the performance of his career, I believe and that is worth seeing. BUT, I hated the premise of the movie. He is interviewed by a young, good lookin,' single mom reporter for the local paper while he is performing in a bowling alley. WHAT, WHY, TELL ME WHY do young women (she might have been mid-to-late-20's) fall for older (58...oh, if I were only 58 again) scruffy, alcoholic, smelly SOTS like this one? I mean I do not get it. Clue me in someone. What is she trying to do, REDEEM him? He finally redeems himself, but not with her and I suppose that is the story. Ladies, please enlighten me...young men who haven't shaved and sport a five o'clock heavy shadow,,,what do you find attractive??????? And, older guys that look like they have been rode hard and hung out to dry. What is the attraction? Maybe I need to go to charm school to learn that. Anyway...that's it...maybe, perhaps, yep, I am just jealous. Oh, by the way...the soundtrack was great. Some really GOOOOOD country songs and if it was Jeff Bridges singing, he did a better than credible job. If you want to cry in your beer, some of these songs will help you bring up a tear or two.
