Guns

February, 20, 2010

By John Mayo (D., DeSoto County)

Mississippi House of Representatives

The purpose of these e-mails is to inform you where I am coming from on controversial issues so that you might make an informed decision at election time. There's probably some things I do not need to write about, but I promised to inform you of my position on even the most controversial of issues.  Guns are one of those issues.

Here is an e-mail I got this morning, my reply, a subsequent reply from an NRA affiliated organization, and my answer to that one.

Original letter

From: Robert Whitten

Sent: Friday, February 19, 2010 6:01 PM

To: John Mayo

Subject: Senate Bill 2153

John, as one of your constituents from Hernando, I urge you to vote YES on Senate

Bill 2153. Citizens should have the right to defend themselves at all times against the lawless elements prevalent in our society. Thank you.

I won't BS you, if you mean the gun in restaurants bill, the answer is "no."  As a citizen I have the right to protect myself from the criminals and the people who think they are Rambo.  I've protected you by killing enough people to last your lifetime.

BUT, I will always vote for you to have the right to protect yourself in your home, your car, and your business without fear of prosecution...just not when someone endangers people in a crowded environment.

Have you ever voted for me?  I hope so, but I did not want to say what you wanted to

hear...I just do not do that.

Thanks,

John

Constituent's Subsequent Reply

Thank you for your candid answer to my e-mail. You have your vote and I have mine and both will be a resounding NO. Thank you for your time.

Dear Mr. Mayo:

I have been informed about your position concerning the right to carry a firearm in Mississippi parks. Just as an informational thing, we refer to these areas in which the

citizen cannot protect himself as "defenseless zones."  To publicize the presence of

such a zone is to say to the criminal or to the deranged person, "These people are

defenseless.  They cannot hurt you if you try to kill them."

It seems logical, then, to allow the Second Amendment to have its effect in all of the country, not just the home.  Please see the book, “More Guns, Less Crime,” by John

Lott.

Crime has decreased in every state that has the right to carry law, some 40 states.  Also, please notice that the mass shootings happen in defenseless zones. The states without the right to carry law have had hundreds of deaths simply the people have not been able to carry a firearm.  Even police deaths from shootings have dropped in the right to carry states.

Thought you would want to know. We will be passing the information about your position to the NRA.

My Subsequent Reply

I hope you would also be frightened about the prospect of some Rambo carrying a gun stuck in his belt taking on a guy holding up a restaurant.  Tell you what... I will do what I can to protect my family from a perp...I'll sue the crap out of some Rambo who shoots a member of my family thinking he's God's messenger to save humanity in a restaurant shootout.
