C-L Blog
February 25, 2010
?> By John Mayo (D., DeSoto County) Mississippi House of Representatives
In the last two weeks I have received more than 100 e-mails from across the state, but in particular from DeSoto County. I have attempted to answer each one, but they are becoming too numerous to reply, even with a form letter. I have put each one into my database to receive updates both on the issue of funding education and other legislative matters. The Senate is debating overriding the Governor's veto as we speak. I will report the outcome later today. If they are successful, the House takes the next shot. If given the opportunity by the senate, I will vote to override. If you read the Clarion Ledger, you know that the governor has found $36 million from stimulus money in Washington. He has done this before-finding "found" money at the last minute. I wrote a blog about it in this morning's on-line version of the Clarion. Here is a link the Clarion Ledger's news website www.clarionledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/frontpage. I paste my blog below. Incidentally, unless I am so misinformed as to be ridiculous, I know of NO effort to cut out Augusts' check. I wish I knew where that rumor started...I am getting that one from Clarksdale teachers.
Do You Play Wii? Posted 2/25/2010 7:59 AM CST on www.clarionledger.com. Pulling a Rabbit Out of the Hat....
Making a person disappear and then reappear at the back of the room. The Mii characters you can manipulate to jump up and down after winning a sword fight duel in Wii. Call it what you will but these tricks by the Governor with "found" money are too coincidental, too brinksmanship, and too self-serving. The Greeks called it "Deus Ex Machinus" when all seemed lost only to have the solution come out of nowhere to save the day. I've said it before, "I do not envy the governor's position at this time." But finding this money in Washington that was "saved," unclaimed by a prior administration, or just "lying around for the taking" is simply too coincidental when we are trying to find solutions to this budget crisis. These caches seem to come just in the nick of time. But, the day is not saved and now after one too many of these discoveries, I am wondering if the governor does not have access to other funds that the legislature should know about. The House and Senate compromised on a bill that worked with money we knew we had. The governor vetoes the bill and says, "Oh, I found $30 million of our money that was ‘saved’ in Washington from the stimulus package.” Come clean, governor, we may be separate branches but we should work together. You, sir, are playing on a one-man team. And, this is not a Wii game to celebrate at the end. |
