NASA
May 18, 2010?> By John Mayo (D., DeSoto County) Mississippi House of Representatives
I am on a road trip with my grandson Trey, who is 13. Today we went to the Kennedy Space Flight Center...was there six hours "reliving" the heady days we all felt when President John Kennedy uttered those words of "sending a man to the moon by the end of the decade" not because we want to but because we can. The different films we saw sent chills up your spine and made you feel downright proud to be an American. Besides the obvious "awesome," I came away with two thoughts. We are doing this on the cheap. Staying at a place a friend has, cooking our own food, and in a couple of days camping out on a beach in what amounts to an Army pup tent. The first...the NASA visit alone exposed my grandson to some unbelievable opportunities available to him. Throughout the films they were talking the "vision" thing. Inspiring, visioning, believing are traits these men and women had. I wished we could bring all of our Delta students to see this up close and personal. The second came when a presenter talked of turning everything involving low orbit launches to private business. This includes the space station supply and upkeep. I have concerns and I voiced them to the presenter. I felt NASA, or some in NASA, have concerns, too. I know a lot of businesspersons who are generous, more generous than they need to be. But, over the last three-to-four weeks I have been in two meetings...one dealing with feces removal, the other with oil removal where businessmen want to cut corners; fight government regulations meant to protect not only the environment, but also consumer; and, will do what it takes to make a dollar. I do not fault them for making a dollar...they are the engine driving the economy. But, when I hear them say, "Your regulations (meant to protect a consumer) are killing our business," I wonder where their concerns lies? Outer space is "our last frontier". I hope that government puts in place the regulations needed to protect us on earth from the people who take short cuts in space. And, that's all I have to say about that. |
