Tupelo Man Ordered to Pay Child Support or Go To Prison

Jackson -- A Tupelo man has been sentenced for failure to support his child, Attorney General Jim Hood announced on Feb. 16.

Barrett Bishop, 36, of Tupelo, was sentenced Tuesday by Lee County Circuit Court Judge Jimmy Roberts for failure to pay his court ordered child support. Roberts ordered

Bishop to pay $2,000 on Feb. 16 and sentenced him to five years, suspended, in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections, with post release supervision and non-adjudication.

Furthermore, Bishop is to pay an additional $200 a month on top of his regular child support payments until the arrearage amount of $18,000 is paid in full.

"The Judge scolded this defendant in open court and called this a serious and egregous crime against Bishop's two children," said Hood. "Judge Roberts is trying to give this defendant a chance to do the right thing -- pay what he owes and avoid jail time."

Child Desertion Unit Director, Special Assistant Attorney General Deshun T. Martin, handled this case for the Attorney General's Office.
