Suspect Leads Authorities on Chase Across County Lines

A Byhalia man is in custody following a chase that covered two counties and included officers from four law enforcement agencies.

Katari V. Martin, 23, of Byhalia, was arrested around 9:30 a.m. He faces charges in both Olive Branch and Marshall County.

“At approximately 8:52 a.m. the Olive Branch Police Department was notified by the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office that they were on Highway 78 pursuing a vehicle whose occupant was wanted on burglary charges,” noted OBPD assistant chief Mark Kimbell. “Olive Branch Police dispatchers also confirmed that the suspect vehicle, a black Dodge truck, was stolen from Holly Springs.”
At Bethel Road, the suspect’s vehicle exited Highway 78 at Bethel Road and continued north onto Hacks Cross Road. Olive Branch officers entered the pursuit on Hacks Cross as the vehicle crossed the Highway 302 Bypass.

“The suspect vehicle then turned around on Hack Cross and proceeded back south,” Kimbell continued. “Once the vehicle again crossed the Highway 302 Bypass going south, the driver of the vehicle attempted to make a left turn to go east on Highway 302 and struck a Toyota Tacoma pick-up.”

The Toyota’s driver of the truck did not appear injured, he added, but two children who were also occupants of the truck were transported to the hospital by ambulance for evaluation.
After the crash, the suspect fled on foot and ran into a wooded area at the southeast corner of Hacks Cross and Highway 302. A search of the area was conducted by officers of the Olive Branch Police Department, DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department, Marshall County Sheriff’s Department and the Law Enforcement Division of the Mississippi Department of Transportation. The suspect was located at approximately 9:26 a.m. and taken into custody.
Martin has been charged by the Olive Branch Police Department with leaving the scene of an accident, failure to yield to blue lights and reckless driving.
