(Above) Dreams of a white Christmas turned nightmarish last December for Entergy Mississippi crews working in harsh conditions to restore power to 90,000 West Virginians affected by a major winter storm. Some of those same crews are now in Arkansas and north Mississippi to battle expected outages from the Jan. 29 arctic blast. (Below) Yes, West Virginia, there is a Santa Claus! Entergy Mississippi crews left their friends and families behind Christmas week to head to West Virginia to help restore light and life to some 90,000 residents left powerless by a major winter storm. Entergy Offers Assistance to Neighbors When Mother Nature Strikes
Thirty-nine linemen and support personnel from Entergy Mississippi, Inc. in central Mississippi left at midday on Jan. 29 for Southaven and Senatobia. The workers will help restore power to customers affected by a major winter storm. The crews, which had been preparing for the storm since earlier in the week, mobilized quickly once the National Weather Service increased its ice prediction from one-eighth of an inch to three-eighths of an inch of ice for the north Mississippi area. There were few outages there by noon on Jan. 29, but that’s expected to change as the weather worsens. “Once the prediction for ice increased, we wanted to get our crews on the road as quickly as possible before travel conditions began to deteriorate further and before outages begin increasing up north,” said Patrick Nelson, regional customer service manager for Entergy. “Ice storms can pose a significant threat to an electric system. We’ll have crews in place if needed to restore customers’ power as soon as we are safely able to do so.” Entergy Mississippi also sent 20 scouts to southern Arkansas on Jan. 28 and eight scouts to north Mississippi in preparation for expected outages. Additional crews may leave for these areas on the morning of Jan. 30, depending on the damage wrought by the storm. The DeSoto Civic Center parking lot in Southaven is serving as a gateway and staging area for crews being sent to north Mississippi and eastern Arkansas from central and south Mississippi. Entergy Mississippi, Inc. provides electricity to more than 433,000 customers in 45 counties. It is a subsidiary of Entergy Corporation. Entergy Corporation is an integrated energy company engaged primarily in electric power production and retail distribution operations. Entergy owns and operates power plants with approximately 30,000 megawatts of electric generating capacity, and it is the second-largest nuclear generator in the United States. Entergy delivers electricity to 2.7 million utility customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.
