Attorney General Requests Governor Add "Spice" to Extraordinary Session Agenda

August 25, 2010

Jackson--Attorney General Jim Hood is asking Governor Haley Barbour to add "Spice" to the agenda for the upcoming extraordinary session of the Legislature.

"Spice," a synthetic marijuana, has become a growing problem for many Mississippi communities.  Convenience stores and other businesses are selling these substances over the counter to minors as well as adults.

The products are usually marketed as "incense." but when smoked produce a high similar to that of smoking marijuana.

"Many cities and counties have enacted local ordinances imposing misdemeanor penalties for sale or possession of 'Spice'," Hood said in his request to the Governor.  "However, comprehensive regulation is needed to truly protect the children and citizens of this State."

Hood is drafting a bill for presentation to the legislature.  Several states have already made "Spice" illegal, and many others are in the process of doing so.

"This will not cost the taxpayers for this to be included in the special session," said Hood.  "The Governor should do the right thing and add this to the call."
