Art Lovers Invited to "Think Pink" Exhibit at NWCC
By Brittany Greer For The Observer
The upcoming Northwest Mississippi Community College exhibition, “Think Pink,” will feature works with a splash of pink in awareness of breast cancer survivors, according to coordinator Sharon Williams. The exhibition will run Feb. 1-26 at the Northwest Art Gallery on the Senatobia campus. An opening reception will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 1. Williams, exhibition chair for the Chimneyville Weavers and Spinners Guild of Jackson, holds art degrees from Northwest and the Memphis College of Art. She has been in charge of these exhibitions for the past 12 years. “I coordinate annual exhibitions for our guild to be shown at Northwest and then move on occasion to other venues to educate the public on fiber arts,” she said. “In the past, the exhibition has traveled to Corinth and Holmes Community College in Raymond.” Each year the exhibition has a different theme in which the artists incorporate into their pieces, according to Williams. “The theme is what ties every piece together. I never know what I’m going to get for the exhibitions until the day I pick them up,” she said. “These exhibitions are my way of giving back to the community as well as fulfilling the public education requirements for the different guilds I belong to,” Williams said. William’s inspiration for the exhibitions came after a trip to England. “I went to England with a fellow weaver and saw a book by a painter who had fabrics woven to coordinate with his paintings,” she explained. “I found this very interesting. These are the only exhibitions around that include fiber work, weaving, knitting, embroidery and beading, making it different from any other.” Chimneyville Weavers and Spinners Guild is sponsoring the exhibition, which features more than 50 pieces by members of the Memphis Guild of Handloom Weavers, DeSoto Arts Guild, Craftsmen’s Guild of Mississippi and North Mississippi Fiber Arts. Pieces include fiber works, paintings and pottery. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to noon on Friday. Admission is free. The Northwest Mississippi Community College Fine Arts Division offers classes in the fundamentals of drawing; painting; ceramics; art history; and computer graphics for individuals seeking opportunities for a career in the arts or for personal enrichment.
