Students enrolled in the Student Support Services program at Northwest Mississippi Community College visited Mud Island in Memphis on Oct. 20 as part of a cultural learning trip. Those attending included Latoya Smith, Hernando; Lagteania Scott, Winstonville; Terrella McNutt, Jessica Stewart and Crystal Meeks, all of Marks; Janice Allen, Dundee; Joshua Rubbin, Red Banks; Bennie Thomas, Marks; Alandra Bell, Crenshaw; Anita Bonilla, Senatobia; Jasmine Russell, Sardis; Jennifer Williams; Grenada; Sabrina Williams, Lambert; Diana Adieh, Batesville; Brandon McCorkle, Marks; Dana Golden, Marks; Stephine Chapman, Batesville; MaryLee Sturgeon, director of Student Support Services; and Sandra Slocum, translation specialist. Not pictured are counselor Natasha Johnson and secretary Hayley Hayes. The program is federally funded to provide free tutoring services in all subjects: career, academic and personal counseling; peer counseling; assistance in obtaining financial aid; cultural activities and workshops on current topics; and assistance in transferring to a four-year college or university. In order for a student to qualify for the program, he/she must be a full time and have an academic major. Students must also meet one of three other qualifications:  be a first generation college student, receive a pell grant or have a documented disability. (Photo by Hayley Hayes)
