NWCC Class Teaches Students How to Bring Old Furniture Back to Life

Learning to re-upholster furniture could be the answer for a fresh look in the home this spring. The Division of Continuing Education at Northwest Mississippi Community College is offering Beginning Upholstery, Thursdays, Jan. 21 - Feb. 18, from 6-8 p.m. in the art building, Room 205 on the Senatobia campus.

Gloria Singleton, owner of Designs by Gloria and instructor for Hancock Fabrics, will teach the basics of upholstery: the skills, materials, tools and tricks of the trade.

The first class will consist of discussing fabrics, tools and supplies needed for students’   projects. Students will be required to bring a small piece of furniture to work on and will learn to cut fabric, attach it to furniture, and attach trim.

Fee for this class is $125, plus fabric and supplies (approximately $25). The deadline to register is Jan. 19.

Other non-credit classes offered in January on the Senatobia campus include fabric/furniture painting, guitar Instruction and Introduction to Google web application.

Fabric/furniture painting, which is taught by Singleton, will be offered on Saturdays, Jan. 23 - Feb. 13, from 9-11 a.m. in the art building, Room 205.

Don’t throw away your old furniture or clothes. Use your artistic expression and recycle. Learn how to embellish your furniture or clothes by enhancing them through decorative painting. You don’t have to be an artist to take up decorative painting.

The fee for the class is $125, plus fabric and supplies (approximately $25). The deadline to register is Jan. 21.

Guitar instruction will be offered on Tuesdays, Jan. 26 - May 18, from 5-8 p.m. in the art building, Room 105. Lessons are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration deadline is Jan. 20. 

Using the Suzuki methods, students ages 4 to 16 will learn the art of playing the classical guitar. The student will learn to play songs by listening to a piece of music every day on the CD, and practicing at least 15 minutes a day.

The fee for the course, which will be Davy Ray Bennett, is $30 (30-minute lesson); $35 (45-minute lesson); and $55 (one hour lesson).

Supplies needed for the class include classical guitar and footstool, Suzuki Guitar School Book I and Suzuki Guitar School Book I CD. The approximate cost of supplies is $30, not including the guitar. A recital will be held on May 18.

Introduction to Google web application will be held on Wednesdays, Jan. 27 - March 3, from 6-8 p.m. in the Tunica Building, Room 130. The class will be taught by Ray Sharpe and costs $85.

This course will introduce six popular Google web-based applications, including how to set up your Google account to access them. No software is required to use these free web applications at home or the office.

The fee for this class is $85. The deadline to register is Jan. 25.
