Northwest Announces Annual Student Art Sale

By Brittany Greer

For The Observer

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Les Fauves Art Club will hold its annual holiday art sale on Friday, Dec. 4, from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. in the Art Gallery on the Senatobia campus.

The sale, which helps raise money for the art department, is a great opportunity for individuals to buy original artwork created by students and faculty, according to Lawayne House, department chair. Pottery, watercolors, oils, drawings and mixed media work will be for sale.

"For art majors, this event is a great learning experience,” said House. “You just   can't predict what the public will buy. Shopping at this sale helps support art students and also encourages them to continue in their educational pursuits.”

All proceeds—except for a 10 percent commission fee—go to the student. The commission fee goes into the Les Fauves Art Club account which helps cover future expenses.

House and Northwest art faculty Eunika Rogers and Ashley Chavis will each donate an original work of art for a door prize.

House said the sale showcases works of art that could be ideal holiday gifts.

“Our holiday sale is a well-loved tradition at Northwest,” he said. “Art works are a great investment specifically since their value will always increase.”

The Northwest Mississippi Community College fine arts division classes in the fundamentals of drawing; painting; ceramics; art history and computer graphics for individuals seeking opportunities for a career in the arts or for personal enrichment.
