High school seniors still deciding what to do after graduation got the chance to visit Northwest Mississippi Community College and learn about a variety of academic programs offered.

The “Go Northwest” program was held at the Senatobia campus in the David M. Haraway Center Nov. 12 and 13. Each day after registration, Northwest student speakers discussed why they chose Northwest, what they do on a daily basis and what they like most about the school.

“It was a way to show the high school students what a day at Northwest would be like,” said Jere Herrington, director of recruiting.

Door prizes were also given, including two for a two-year half-tuition scholarship to Northwest. At 9:30 a.m., prospective students broke into separate groups according to their programs of interest, visited the classroom facilities and heard from Northwest faculty.

This part of the program was very effective, according to Herrington.

“It gave students the chance to see what our classrooms look like,” she said. “They got to meet faculty members, listen to them discuss programs of study and see what going to class at Northwest is all about.”

Lunch was available for participants followed by optional campus tours. Reservations for the two program days were available on a first-come, first-served basis. Two hundred students participated each day.

Academic programs featured at the event included: accounting, art, allied health, business administration, communications/public relations and journalism, computer information systems, computer science, criminal justice, exercise science, general college, mathematics, Music, nursing, pre-pharmacy, psychology, speech/theatre, social work and health related professions, among others.
